This month's value is PRIDE

Our well-being theme this half-term is connecting with nature.

3rd March 2023

Dear parents & carers,

Our Value for March if PRIDE. We are encouraging children to be proud of who they are, how hard are they work and build their self-esteem and confidence. In assembly today we talked about what makes us proud of ourselves and being proud of the process not just the end goal.

Books that can be read at home to support this are here:

https://childrenslibrarylady.com/books-self-esteem/

https://www.booksfortopics.com/booklists/topics/science-maths-computing/all-about-me/

Many are in our library or are available on YouTube for free.

Book Week has been wonderful. Thank you all for your support and dressing children up for World Book Day as well as visiting the Book Fayre. It is greatly appreciated.  Thank you to Ms Anstee, Mrs Turner and Mrs Scarrott for all their organisation and the whole Bushmead team for supporting all we have done.  We hope that the week will encourage children to read for pleasure.

Attendance is extremely important. One of the best attendance days so far this year was World Book Day, yet today we have 62 children absent from school! Something for us to think about.  ALL CHILDREN NEED TO BE HERE EVERY DAY. 28% of our children are persistent absentees, meaning they are missing more than 10% (about a month or most of a half-term) of their education annually. This has to change.

Absence harms children's educational opportunity and has a detrimental effect on their mental health and well-being.  If you need to travel, please keep to the school holidays.  Our absence, often emergency travel, is particularly noticeable before and after school holidays.  THANK YOU to all of your that support our school and your child's education by ensuring they are here as much as possible.

Thank you to FOBS for their continued support. This week we have had fantastic interest from companies wishing to support the refurbishment of our hut. We have had a large TV donated to the school to support our ICT, and have been planning events for Easter. Our DT room and Sensory Room, almost finished and underway respectively, major fantastic projects that we wouldn't have without additional funding from our amazing volunteers! Thank you.  We do need more volunteers, if you can spare a few hours please email the school office or fobs@bushmeadprimaryschool.co.uk.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards,

Joanne Travi

Earlier this year our school choir took part in Young Voices.  On Monday, a charity single by Heather Small and the Young Voices Choir will be released. This ties in beautifully with our value this month.  All proceeds will be donated to the children's mental health charity Place2Be.... here is the preview. Prepare for goosebumps!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4I9s-ITfo0

Every single voice from the YV23 concerts has been blended together along with the unmistakeable sound of Heather Small for this incredible live recording.

Keep an eye on your inbox on Monday and social media for ways to buy the single.

Turkey & Syria

What Happened?

Devastating earthquakes occurred on and after 6th February in Kahramanmaras in Turkey and North Syria. The events have killed and injured tens of thousands of people creating a humanitarian crisis. The earthquakes caused more than 160,000 buildings to collapse or become severely damaged.

Why weren't Turkey & Syria prepared?

Many of the buildings that have fallen were supposed to be earthquake proof. This was proven to be false, much to the experts dismay after their warnings.  Concerns around corruption are being investigated.

Over 600 people, in clouding a mayor of one of the towns are at the centre of the investigation.

Who was affected?

The current death toll stands at 50,000 with tens of thousands of people homeless and displaced. At present, many are still missing, so the exact number of fatalities is not known.

How you can help.

Charities are collecting to help:

From Mrs Smartt - Science Lead

As Bushmead is a member of the Luton Ogden Trust Physics hub, which aims to enhance the teaching of physics in primary schools, we have been invited to participate in a virtual science fair along with other schools within Luton. The completion involves children creating a video of themselves conducting a  safe physics experiment at home. This could be them by themselves, or with family and friends. The videos are to be uploaded to Google drive. As the videos are to be shared with other schools, a permission form will need to be completed also. There is a QR code which you can use for ideas, or alternately look at the list of science websites on our school website.  For further details please see the poster.
