This month's value is integrity.

Our well-being theme this half-term is Connecting with Others.

11th October 2024

Dear Parents & Carers,

Thank you so much for your contributions to Luton Foodbank, an amazing response as always.

There are important changes to our Absence Procedure and Leave of Absence requests outlined in the letters below.  We hope that the absence management changes will help us all be more efficient and effective.

The message regarding Leave of Absence is also very clear. Please do not take children out of school for holidays and travel.

Paying for trips and visits is a persistent challenge. Trips and visits are an important part of learning.  We have reduced the number of such events to help parents. We have one external trip and one in-house visit per year, averaging a cost of approximately £35 per annum.

If anyone is finding this too much, we encourage you to contact us, and we can arrange for partial or staggered payments.  The message is for those that can pay but don't.  We have to send numerous reminders, consider cancelling the trip for all as it is not financially viable and then consider whether non-payers can take part.  This seems harsh, but we have to be fair.

We still have 27 families that have not contributed to the Anglo-Saxon event in Year 4 next week - almost a whole class.  This is deeply frustrating and wastes a great deal of time.  Please pay promptly. If you cannot, please contact us.

We are looking forward to our Parent-Teacher Conferences that will take place on the 21st & 23rd October.  These will take place in school.  We cannot wait to share how your child is doing at school. The team and the children have been working exceptionally hard!

We will be holding open mornings for new parents in the next few weeks - see the information below.  We are already thinking about 2025/26!

We have had a fantastic response to our potential nursery. If you, or someone you know, would like to show an expression of interest, please share this link - Proposed Nursery.   We will not be able to proceed until it is approved by Luton Borough Council in early December. As soon as we can confirm, we will!

A reminder that Friday 25th October is an INSET (teacher training day) - so school will be closed to children that day.

Have a lovely weekend.

Thank you to our School Council, Mrs Gray and Mrs Toyer for supporting our Luton Foodbank collection. And a huge thank to our families for their contributions.

Absence Arrangements

Please find some important information below regarding absence management at our school. These changes will be implemented from Monday 4th November 2024 (after half term) and a review of our Attendance Policy in the coming months will reflect these changes. Please take a few minutes to ensure you are familiar with all the changes with regards to reporting absence to school.

Absence – Illness

If your child is absent from school due to illness, you must contact us using this email address (absence@bushmeadprimaryschool.co.uk) before 8.55am. Please do not communicate via any other platform, e.g. Class DOJO. Please do not call the office.

In the subject bar of the email, please insert the name of your child. Within the email, please include the reasons for absence (symptoms) along with an expected return date. If you do not have your child’s class details, please include their date of birth. ‘Generally unwell’ is not acceptable; you must be specific.  A decision on whether or not to authorise the absence will be made from the information you share. If the absence is not authorised, an unauthorised mark for your child will be entered within their Attendance Record which could lead to a Penalty Notice being issued.

Absence – Appointments

Any planned pupil absences (for appointments) must be advised at least one day prior to the day of the appointment via the school attendance email (absence@bushmeadprimaryschool.co.uk). Please do not call the office.

Evidence, for example, a hospital letter or screenshot of the appointment details, must be sent at the same time. We are unable to authorise any appointments without evidence.

We would expect parents to ensure their children are attending school before and after appointments wherever possible, and to try and make appointments for non-urgent reasons outside of school hours. If this is not possible, a reason must be given to the school (e.g. treatment being administered at a hospital). Our registers of pupil attendance are legal documents and the information contained within them must be accurate.

If the absence is not authorised, an unauthorised mark for your child will be entered within their Attendance Record which could lead to a Penalty Notice being issued.

Absence – Term time absence

A Leave of Absence Form should be used when you are planning for your child to be absent for any reason (not illness) during the school term. Care should be taken when completing this form. You must ensure this is completed fully and supporting documents (e.g. flight confirmations) are submitted via email to absence@bushmeadprimaryschool.co.uk at least two weeks prior to travel. This form can be found on our website.

A decision on whether your child’s LOA is authorised or not will be taken from the information you provide on this form. The Leave of Absence form will not be processed without all the required documents. If the leave is not authorised, you are extremely likely to receive a Penalty Notice. Once the form is submitted, you will receive an email response from school regarding this.

Punctuality – Late marks

A late mark is entered into your child’s attendance register if they arrive at school after 8.55am. Any children arriving after this time must be accompanied by you to the front office. Please ensure you are making arrangements to ensure your child is not late routinely. Pupils arriving late to school after the registers close (9.15am) can receive an unauthorised late mark. If the reason given (e.g. traffic) is repeated or not felt applicable, the late mark is not authorised and an unauthorised mark for your child will be entered within their Attendance Record which could lead to a Penalty Notice being issued.

Sickness & Diahorrea

We are amending our guidance on the 48hr ‘stay at home’ guidance. Following a period of sickness (vomiting and/or diarrhoea), your child should remain at home for at least 24 hours. If you then feel your child is recovered (e.g. eating normally /no other symptoms), they can then return to school 24 hours from the last occasion of vomiting or diarrhoea. Please use your discretion. Any children with ‘active’ symptoms MUST remain at home.

Dear Parent(s)/Carer(s)

I am writing to inform you of the government statutory guidance “Working Together to Improve School Attendance” which came into effect on 19th August 2024.

Please make a note of the following changes: -

Per Parent/Per Child Penalty Notices

  • Penalty Notices for absences will be issued per child, per parent. This means that if multiple siblings are absent during term time, and the absences are unauthorised by the school, each parent will receive a separate fine for each child’s absence. Penalty Notices will be issued by the local authority, and the payment will be made directly to them. This is dealt with by the local authority’s Attendance Support Team (previously known as Education Welfare Service).

First Offence Penalties

  • The first penalty notice issued to each parent in respect of a particular pupil will be charged at:

£160.00 if paid within 28 days. This will be reduced to £80 if paid within 21 days.

Second Offence (within 3 years)

  • A second penalty notice issued to the same parent in respect of the same pupil is charged at:

A flat rate of £160.00 if paid within 28 days.

Third Offence and any further offences (within 3 years)

  • A third penalty notice cannot be issued to the same parent in respect of the same child within 3 years of the date of issue of the first. In a case where the national threshold is met for a third time (or subsequent times) within those 3 years, alternative action will be taken instead. This will often include considering prosecution but may include other tools such as one of the other attendance legal interventions.

10 Sessions (5 days) of Unauthorised Absence in a 10-week period

  • Penalty Notice Fines will be considered when there have been 10 sessions (which is the same as 5 days) of unauthorised absence in a 10-week period.

Yours sincerely,

Ms J Travi (Head Teacher)

From Monday 14th October - 9pm on Sunday 20th October Years 3-6 will be taking part in a 'Battle of the Bands' competition on TT Rockstars with the other classes in their year group.

Children are encouraged to use TT Rockstars as much as possible over the week (at school and at home) to earn as many points for their class as possible. The winning classes will be announced in our next Celebration Assembly.

Year 2 worked in groups to research a Black inventor: Lonnie Johnson, Lewis Latimer or Patricia Bath. They created a fact poster for the inventor they were researching. In the afternoon, they became inventors and had to invent something that would protect an egg when dropped from a height (The Egg Drop Challenge).
